Reptiles in the Sky reviewed in Cadence Magazine

In the 2011 vol#38 issue Stuart Kremsky writes:

(....) it leaves you wanting more. Danstrup's music is characterized by quirky, serpentine themes, rhythmic dexterity and flexibility, and a carefree and humorous approach to performance. No wasted notes here, as Danstrup adroitly showcases various aspects of his music and keeps everyone happy, including this listener, for 42 minutes straight. Warmly recommended. (April 2011)

Reptiles in the Sky rewarded

The Danish Art Council - Statens Kunstfond - has awarded the Reptiles CD with DKR 50.000. They give this motivation:

This successful CD is full of life and joy.

The music reveals a new and different side of the composer than ever heard before.

This is acoustic music with a vision, cheekiness, overview and an urge to experiment.

The arrangements are both odd and straight-ahead and the playful themes serves as a splendid vehicle for the participating musicians.

In general, the music itself is a unit of well composed and well produced stories. (Dec 2010)

Reptiles in the Sky reviewed in AllAboutJazz

In the October issue of All About Jazz - New York, John Sharpe writes: tightly-arranged, well-played, quirky but fun, jazz. Click here to get to aaj-ny. There is also an interview with Dansih drummer Kresten Osgood. (Sep 2010)

Nice reviews

The Reptiles in the Sky release gets a very nice review in the Danish jazzmagazine JazzSpecial #116. Also the Danish newspaper Information has written acclaiming words both on the Copenhagen Jazzfestival gig and the record. 'Danstrup is full-heartedly back on the music scene. And his reptile laboratory should promptly be awarded as honourable in contemporary Danish Jazz History'. To read the JazzSpecial review, go to the menu Reptiles in the Sky,  (Aug 2010)

Happy as a Flower: new Kaspersen CD

Recorded on an intense session in June, this record is released some 6 months after -  keeping it fresh in memory. The music is also fresh as a daisy and the Jan Kaspersen sound and trademarks are not left out here. (Dec 2009)

First recording session with own band and original compositions for 12 years!

In September 2009 I finally got the chance to record my own stuff again, for the first time since 'Aisha' (1997). This time I have gathered an international group to record 9 original compositions, basically the set up is a trio (bass, drums, saxophone) with a brass section (trumpet, Eb horn, French horn, Trombone and Tuba). We will soon mix and edit the album, which also includes some free, collective impro's. (Nov 2009)

New acoustic bass guitar!

I have got a new bass guitar, custom made and hand built by Kenneth Brögger. This very fine instrument can be heard - alterning with my double bass - on my recent recordings. You can see pictures of it in the gallery menu of this site. (Nov 2009)
